SEXUAL ASSAULT

Consider taking the following notes: 

Case number

Date/Time

Address/Location

Initial case details

Victim/Suspect info

Assigned Officer/Detective

 

Consider the following:

What is the appropriate PPE for this scene?

Did someone start a crime scene log?

Is the scene secure and safe?

Is evidence on the exterior and/or interior of the scene?

Should the car be towed?

Is consent or a search warrant needed?

Overall/mid-range/close-up of scene

Intersection/street location information

Point of entry/exit

Security cameras/systems

Overall/mid-range/close-up of items of evidentiary value

Using an Alternate Light Source, search areas of interest for the presence of biological fluids

Evidence within the scene to include areas where biological fluids were located

Re-take overall/ mid-range/close-up photographs of scene with photo markers in place

ALS photography of biological fluids

Collect swabs of any apparent body fluids located on items within the scene that cannot be collected for future laboratory processing

Collect items of evidence located within the scene

Other items to consider collecting (either by yourself, detectives or medical personnel) could include:

From the victim:

Rape kit

Collection of clothing

Collection of other swabs/scrapings

Documentation of person/wounds

From Suspect:

Collection of clothing

Collection of swabs/scrapings

Documentation of person/wounds

Process areas of interest within the crime scene using appropriate latent print processing techniques to include:

Entry/exit points

Door handles/knobs

Light switches

Any other surface the suspect may have touched

Conduct a secondary walk through of the scene to ensure that all evidence was documented and collected and everything of evidentiary value was appropriately processed
