Forensic Pocket Guide

Transfer Stains

Transfer stains occur when a bloody object comes in contact with another object and blood is transferred from one object to the other through adhesion.

Swipes

A swipe pattern occurs when blood is transferred onto a surface from a moving object that is already bloodstained.

Wipes

A wipe pattern occurs when an object moves through a bloodstain that already exists on another surface.

Saturation Stain

This is a pattern that is created when blood accumulates into an absorbent material.

Fly Spots

Fly spots are stains that occur as a result of fly activity that may appear to be spatter.  Flies can excrete, regurgitate and transfer blood onto items within a scene, causing these stains.
