Your metal detector has four core parts:
Stabilizer – Supports and assists your arm as you sweep
Control Box – Contains all the controls of the device and processes the signals/pulses emitted to let you know if metal has been found
Search Coil – Rounded piece at the bottom of the device that you sweep across the ground
Shaft – The rod that connects the search coil to the control box
Sweep the device low to the ground (without touching the ground) so that signals penetrate deep into the soil. Sweep the device slowly back and forth so that the device can sense a return signal/pulse if metal is found.
Practice sweeping over a piece of metal so you can familiarize yourself with the sounds your metal detectors makes when it finds metal.
Sweep one area at a time, searching that area methodically. Sweep in one direction. If the metal detector senses something, narrow your search to the area where the sound was heard or the signal was high.
Flag items as you locate them so that you can follow up with the appropriate documentation, excavation and collection techniques.
